The present is embodied in Hexagram 9 - Hsiao Ch'u (The Taming Power of the Small): There will be progress and success. We see dense clouds, but no rain coming from our borders in the west.
The second line, undivided, shows it subject, by the attraction of the former line, returning to the proper course. There will be good fortune.
The third line, undivided, suggests the idea of a carriage, the strap beneath which has been removed, or of a husband and wife looking on each other with averted eyes.
The fourth line, divided, shows it subject possessed of sincerity. The danger of bloodshed is thereby averted, and his grounds for apprehension dismissed. There will be no mistake.
The fifth line, undivided, shows its subject possessed of sincerity, and drawing others to unite with him. Rich in resources, he employs his neighbours in the same cause with himself.
The topmost line, undivided, shows how the rain has fallen, and the onward progress is stayed. So must we value the full accumulation of the virtue represented by the upper trigram. A wife exercising restraint, however firm and correct she may be, is in a position of peril, like the moon approaching full. If the superior man prosecutes his measures in such circumstances, there will be evil.
The situation is changing rapidly, and Yin (the passive feminine force) is gaining ground.

The future is embodied in Hexagram 51 - Chen (Shock): There is an intimation of ease and development. When the time of movement comes, the subject will be found looking out with apprehension, yet smiling and talking cheerfully. When the movement, like a crash of thunder, terrifies all within a hundred li, he will be like the sincere worshipper, who is not startled into letting go his ladle and cup of sacrificial spirits.
The things most apparent, those above and in front, are embodied by the upper trigram Sun (Wind), which is transforming into Chen (Thunder). As part of this process, penetration and following are giving way to movement, initiative, and action.
The things least apparent, those below and behind, are embodied by the lower trigram Chi'en (Heaven), which is transforming into Chen (Thunder). As part of this process, strength and creativity are giving way to movement, initiative, and action.
